چکیده
* This paper combines and extends research work that appeared in preliminary form in Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Military Communications, Mc Lean, Virginia, USA, October 1996, Eds. IEEE, pp. 755-759 and in Proceedings of the 5th IEEE International Conference on Universal Personal Communications, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, Sept.-Oct. 1996, Eds. IEEE, pp. 487-491. Part of this work was done in RACE-Project R1086 TELEMED. Summary A connection establishment protocol for multimedia communication residing at the OSI application layer is presented. The new protocol (C_MACSE) adopts a comprehensive approach for Quality of Service (QoS), as it incorporates resource management strategies for the CPU scheduling and the virtual memory of a multimedia system. The C_MACSE protocol provides services for the negotiation, renegotiation and monitoring of the comprehensive QoS.

MACSE: A generic connection establishment protocol for multimedia communication residing at the OSI application layer
The multiple association control service element (MACSE) described in this work is a new connection establishment protocol for the application layer of the OSI reference model (OSIRM). The objective of the protocol is efficient establishment and control of multimedia associations among multiple spatially dispersed users. MACSE defines a new OSI service to support the communication requirements ...
متن کاملMCIP: A 3G/IP Interworking System Supporting Inter-Cluster Soft Handoff
In this paper, a novel 3-tier Mobile Cellular IP (MCIP) access network is proposed for interworking between a third generation (3G) wireless cellular system and a wireline Internet Protocol (IP) based network. An inter-cluster hard handoff scheme and an inter-cluster soft handoff scheme are proposed, based on the 3-tier MCIP system model, the core network protocol stacks, and the underlying MCI...
متن کاملQoS over Real-Time Wireless Multi-hop Protocol
This paper proposes a way to incorporate multimedia traffic in a real-time wireless communication network without jeopardizing the hard real-time traffic. This idea has been implemented and analyzed as an extension of the real-time multi-hop protocol (RT-WMP), a novel protocol that supports hard real-time traffic in relatively small ad-hoc networks. The protocol allows merging the real-time tra...
متن کاملConcurrent multipath communication for real-time traffic
The growing availability of multiple network interfaces on both mobile and fixed hosts makes concurrent multipath transfer (CMT) an appealing option to improve the performance of increasingly bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications. The Westwood Stream Control Transmission Protocol with Partial Reliability (W-PR-SCTP) is a partially reliable, SCTP-based transport protocol featuring a novel ada...
متن کاملA Critique of Modern Internet Protocols: The Issue of Support for Multimedia
The provision and support of new distributed multimedia services are of prime concern for telecommunications operators and suppliers. Clearly, the potential of the latest Internet protocols to contribute communications components is of considerable interest to them. In this paper we present three of the major new protocols introduced into the Internet environment to support real-time and multim...
